Why preparation matters
A great portrait session doesn't start when the camera clicks — it starts days before. The way you prepare shapes how you feel on the day, and how you feel is exactly what the camera captures. When you arrive calm, rested and confident in your choices, the photos show it.
This guide walks you through everything you need to know before a female portrait session in Porto — from mindset and skincare to outfits and the small details that make a real difference on camera.
Start with the mood, not the outfit
Before you think about what to wear, think about how you want to feel in the photos. Do you want them soft and romantic? Strong and editorial? Natural and candid? Playful and bright?
Your mood shapes every decision that follows — the location, the outfit, the styling, even the time of day we shoot. When you have a clear feeling in mind, the session has direction.
Write down three words that describe the feeling you want. Bring them to the session — they help me guide the shoot toward the right result.
Outfits: less is more
Choosing outfits for a portrait session is simpler than most people think. The goal is to wear something that makes you feel like yourself, not something that competes with your face.
- Choose 1–2 outfits that make you feel good — not just look good
- Avoid busy patterns, large logos and neon colours that distract from your face
- Solid tones, earth colours and soft neutrals photograph beautifully in Porto light
- Bring layers — a jacket, scarf or cardigan completely changes the frame
- Comfort matters more than you think. If you can't walk, sit or breathe easily, it will show
What to avoid
- Pure white in harsh sunlight blows out on camera
- Pure black can lose all detail in shadow
- Wrinkled fabrics look messy after five minutes of sitting — steam or iron before the shoot
Skincare and the days before
Your skin is the foundation of a portrait. You don't need an elaborate routine — just consistency in the days leading up to the session.
- Stay hydrated in the 2–3 days before the session
- Get a full night's sleep the night before — tiredness shows in your eyes
- Avoid trying new skincare products right before the session — breakouts happen at the worst time
- If you wear makeup, keep it natural and bring touch-up essentials
On the day of the session
The hours before the shoot set the tone. A calm start leads to natural, relaxed photos.
- Arrive 10 minutes early to settle in and breathe
- Eat beforehand — low energy shows in your eyes and expression
- Bring any small props that feel personal: a coffee, a book, a flower
- If we're shooting outdoors, dress comfortably for the walk between locations
You don't need to know how to pose
The most common thing I hear before a session is: "I don't know how to pose."
That's completely fine. Posing is my job, not yours. I guide every frame — where to stand, how to move, where to look. You won't be left wondering what to do.
The most important thing you can do is breathe, stay present, and trust the process. The best photos come from real moments, not forced poses.
What to bring
- Your outfits, on hangers if possible
- A small bag for personal items
- Comfortable shoes for walking between locations
- Any props or accessories you'd like to include
- A positive mindset — it makes more difference than any outfit
After the session
Your edited photos will be ready within 5–7 business days. I edit in a natural, consistent style — no heavy retouching, no drastic changes to your face or body. You'll receive a private gallery with all your photos in high resolution.
If you have any questions about preparation, outfits or location, write to me before the session. I'm always happy to help you prepare. See the session pricing to pick your package.
