Porto is built for love stories

Riverside alleys, golden hour on the Douro, grand architecture and quiet gardens — Porto gives couples a cinematic backdrop almost everywhere. The city has a romantic, timeless quality that makes every love story session feel like a film.

Here are our favourite locations and ideas for a couple photoshoot in Porto, along with tips on how to make your session feel personal and unique.

Riverside — Ribeira

The most iconic Porto setting. Narrow streets, tiled façades and the Dom Luís I Bridge in the background. Best at golden hour when the stone glows warm and the river reflects the light.

Ribeira works for couples who want the classic Porto look — the postcard view with a romantic, intimate feel. We walk through the alleys, stop by the river, and use the bridge as a dramatic backdrop.

Foz do Douro

Beach, sea and soft Atlantic light. A completely different mood from the city centre — open, airy and romantic. Great for couples who want a coastal feel and wider, more cinematic frames.

Foz is especially beautiful at sunset, when the light turns golden and the waves create natural movement in the photos. It feels like a different country from central Porto — wild, open and calm.

Palácio de Cristal Gardens

Romantic gardens with panoramic Douro views. Private corners, shaded paths and elegant greenery. This is the location for couples who want a garden setting — quiet, lush and timeless.

The gardens offer variety in a small area — open lawns, tree-lined paths, viewpoints over the river. It's perfect for a relaxed session where you walk and talk together.

Porto streets & Aliados

Grand architecture, wide avenues and authentic urban Porto atmosphere. For couples who want a city feel — modern, editorial and bold. The architecture creates strong lines and dramatic frames.

This works especially well for couples who want a more fashion-editorial look, or for engagement sessions where the city itself is part of your story.

Make it personal

The best couple photos aren't about perfect poses — they're about the way you already are with each other. Bring something personal to the session:

  • A coffee from your favourite café
  • A song you both love (I can play it during the shoot)
  • The way you walk together, the way you hold hands
  • A meaningful location — where you met, where you had a first date
  • Small props that tell your story — a book, a flower, a letter

These small details make the photos yours, not just beautiful but meaningful.

Time of day

Golden hour — the hour before sunset — is the most flattering light for couple photography. The light is soft, warm and directional, creating depth and mood without harsh shadows.

In Porto, golden hour is especially beautiful by the river and at the beach. I always recommend scheduling your session for this time when possible.

What to wear as a couple

Coordinate, don't match. Choose a shared colour palette and let each person express it their own way. Earth tones work beautifully in Porto's warm light.

Before the session, I send personalised outfit recommendations based on the location and mood you want. You don't have to figure it out alone.

Booking your love story session

A couple photoshoot in Porto uses the Couple session package (1.5–2 hours, one location) or the Creative Workshop (4 hours, outdoors, multiple locations). For engagement shoots with multiple locations, I recommend the Creative Workshop.
